On 24 June 2026, the APOLO project brought together researchers, industry experts, EU-funded projects and maritime stakeholders for a dedicated Stakeholder Workshop on “Novel Technologies for Maritime Power Conversion”, hosted at the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and also available online.
The workshop provided a valuable forum to exchange knowledge, present emerging technologies and discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with the transition towards more sustainable and efficient maritime power systems
Bringing together expertise across Europe
The maritime sector is undergoing a major transformation as the industry looks for solutions capable of reducing emissions while maintaining the performance, reliability and flexibility required for marine applications.
The APOLO workshop addressed this challenge from different technological perspectives, bringing together contributions from several European projects and organisations working on ammonia, hydrogen, alternative fuels, fuel cells, CO₂ conversion, emissions monitoring and advanced power conversion technologies.
The programme featured contributions from:
- APOLO, presenting its approach to onboard ammonia cracking and the integration of ammonia-derived hydrogen with fuel cells and engines;
- MARPOWER, focusing on the conceptual design of hydrogen-fuelled gas turbine systems for maritime applications;
- MaritimeMET, highlighting the importance of metrology for sustainable maritime fuels and emissions;
- ELECTROMET, presenting its work on direct CO₂ electroreduction to renewable methane;
- GREENMARINE, addressing the potential of retrofitting decarbonisation technologies, including CO₂ capture, on existing vessels;
- Flotte Hamburg, providing an operational perspective on the transition towards more sustainable harbour fleets.
The workshop also featured several members of the APOLO consortium, including Angela Mary Thomas, Nicole Wermuth and Vegard Frihammer, alongside invited experts and representatives from the participating projects.

From research to maritime applications
A key element of the workshop was the exchange between research and industry. Discussions explored not only technological developments but also their potential integration into real maritime applications, including new vessels and retrofit solutions for existing fleets.
The event concluded with a roundtable discussion, providing participants with an opportunity to exchange views, identify synergies and explore opportunities for future collaboration.
By bringing together different projects and perspectives, the APOLO Stakeholder Workshop demonstrated the importance of cross-sector and cross-project collaboration in accelerating innovation and supporting the maritime energy transition.
